Pittsburgh, PA – December 4, 2012 – Virus Bulletin, a premier provider of independent evaluations of anti-spam and anti-virus products, just published its first ever comprehensive evaluation of anti-spam/anti-virus products on phishing emails. The evaluation, conducted a few weeks ago on a live feed of phishing emails, confirms what many companies are experiencing first hand today: while many products perform relatively well on spam, their vulnerability to phishing often leaves much to be desired, with a number of leading vendors missing more than a quarter of the phishing emails. As the leading provider of dedicated anti-phishing email filters, Wombat Security Technologies has been pointing to this sad state of affairs for many years.
“Virus Bulletin’s first-of-its-kind independent study makes it clearer than ever that companies need to enhance their existing anti-spam/anti-virus solution and that a filter like Wombat’s PhishPatrol® could significantly improve their security posture in this area,” said Dr. Norman Sadeh, Co-Founder, Chairman and Chief Scientist of Wombat Security Technologies and also a Professor of Computer Science at Carnegie Mellon University. “If anything, because Virus Bulletin’s study involved run-of-the-mill phishing attacks rather than more difficult to catch spear phishing emails, prospective customers should assume that the performance of many of these products could be significantly worse than reported,” added Dr. Sadeh.
This view is further reinforced by a Gartner Magic Quadrant report for Secure Email Gateways published in August 2012. In particular the report states that "Better protection from targeted phishing attacks is the most critical new inbound protection capability (72% of respondents indicated that this was a very important capability), but only a few vendors have advanced the state of the art against these attacks."*Wombat’s co-founders have developed the most effective anti-phishing email filtering technology available today. Wombat’s PhishPatrol is designed to be deployed alongside an organization’s existing anti-spam/anti-virus filter.
“Extensive evaluation of PhishPatrol shows that our filter consistently catches many of the phishing emails missed by other filters and does so with a near zero false positive rate,” adds Dr. Sadeh.
