Wombat Now Offering New Training Module for Protected Health Information (PHI), Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), and Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health (HITECH) Compliance

Pittsburgh, PA – August 20, 2013 – Wombat Security Technologies (Wombat), a leading provider of cyber security awareness and training solutions, today announced it is launching a new training module for Protected Health Information (PHI), Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), and Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health (HITECH) compliance mandates. This type of compliance training is mandatory for any organization handling PHI to ensure that the information is being adequately protected.

PHI includes any information about health status, provision of health care, or payment that can be linked to a specific individual. PHI is interpreted broadly and includes data like: names, addresses, dates, phone numbers, email addresses, social security numbers, medical record numbers, account numbers, drug enforcement agency numbers, and other data.

The release of the PHI training module from Wombat comes just in time for organizations to meet government requirements around training employees on PHI. In January 2013, the US Department of Health and Human Services issued the Omnibus Regulations – the Final Rule – requiring compliance by September 23, 2013 with a limited transition time until September, 2014.

"We were honored to work with leading medical centers across the country to develop and validate the content in this training module. Our unique approach to training software creates 'teachable moments' where users learn quickly and effectively which is so important in busy healthcare organizations where patient care must come first," said Joe Ferrara, President and CEO of Wombat Security Technologies.

Wombat's new compliance module teaches employees why and how they should safeguard PHI. Each user will learn:

  • PHI identifiers
  • Mandates that cover PHI compliance
  • Primary components of compliance
  • Best practices for using, disclosing, transmitting, and storing PHI

Wombat's Security Training Platform

The new PHI training module is the fourth in a series of compliance topics in Wombat's "Security Training Platform." The other compliance modules include:

  • Personally Identifiable Information (PII) Training
  • Payment Card Information Training Data Security Standard (PCI DSS) Training
  • Data Protection and Destruction Training

Wombat's comprehensive Security Training Platform enables security professionals and administrators to tackle today's most pressing cyber security issues including phishing, password management, social networking, smartphone/BYOD vulnerabilities, and social engineering. Training is provided in short bursts and focused on key areas. With Wombat's Assessment and Training solutions users learn by doing and are provided immediate feedback to enhance retention. Reporting capabilities in the Platform provide both aggregate and individual data to guide follow-up training programs and show improved results over time.
