Two recent cybersecurity solutions, an artificial intelligence-based biometric security measure from Nuance; and a password policy module from Wombat Security, could help protect credit unions and other organizations defend against fraud.
Burlington, Mass.-based Nuance Communications, Inc. announced Security Suite, what it called “a state-of-the-art biometric security solution for fraud prevention and authentication,” and an advancement to the Nuance Omni-Channel Customer Engagement Platform. Nuance said the solution, which leverages third generation deep neural networks and advanced AI algorithms, is pioneering significant fraud fighting technologies to detect anomalies in an interaction. With these new innovations, Nuance disclosed it is building on a solution that already processes more than five billion successful voice authentications yearly on voice and digital channels including for financial institutions.
Security Suite offers a comprehensive, layered approach, powered by advanced AI, to thwart omni-channel fraud through voice, face or behavioral biometrics. Nuance proclaimed through the introduction of ConversationPrint – the first technology of its kind to hit the market – combined with the development of Intelligent Detectors, the new solution empowered organizations to analyze every facet of each customer interaction.
Highlights of the Security Suite include a form of behavioral biometrics, ConversationPrint, that can identify fraudulent activity in real-time based on choice of words, and patterns of speech or writing, during an interaction with a human or virtual assistant. Nuance applies one its core competencies speech-to-text to short speech segments to analyze vocabulary, sentence structure, grammar, and more that are unique at an individual level. Behavioral biometrics further analyzes behavior patterns including how a person types, uses a mouse, holds their smartphone or even how they pause when accomplishing a task.
Layered together AI-powered Intelligent Detectors forms a profile to verify legitimate users and flag fraudulent activity including spoofing attacks using synthetic speech, recording attacks, mimics, and more. Device ID analyzes audio to determine the device type and model used during the interaction. ANI ID analyzes the meta data in a phone call to identify inconsistencies and determine phone number spoofing. The Geo location feature detects a caller’s location via phone network. Synthetic ID detects speech produced by software. Nuance also announced the release of the third generation of its voice biometric algorithms with Deep Neural Network Gen3.

Pittsburgh based Wombat Security Technologies, a security and awareness firm for industries such as finance and banking, announced what it called “the industry’s first configurable cybersecurity education module,” which allows organizations to teach their users to create strong, effective passwords that comply with specific company policies. This is the first in a series of new modules that will examine password and authentication techniques.
“Our unique product vision is to deliver customization options while preserving the educational integrity of our content, and that’s exactly what we’ve done with the rollout of this Password Policy module, and it’s what we will continue to do with future customizable content,” Joe Ferrara, President and CEO of Wombat said.
The new Password Policy training module allows organizations to configure training to match their individual password policies; teaches universal best practices in password creation, provides awareness to users on the risks of creating ineffective passwords; ensures end users are skilled at creating strong, compliant passwords; and serves as an introduction to password best practices.
Future modules will add to the content, with topics that will include password management, passphrases, PINs, and multi-factor authentication. Forthcoming training releases will provide additional configuration in password management tools and the Global Data Protection Regulation.
